FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions

Cryosonic Cryopen FAq Most common questions answered Swansea Swansea

How Does Cryotherapy Work?

Cryopen treatment is a quick, effective, and safe way to eliminate unwanted skin imperfections. The Cryopen is FDA- and CE-registered.

Cryotherapy breakthrough that uses enhanced cryotherapy.

Pen-like, the tool sprays liquid nitrous oxide (N2O) at minus-127 degrees Celsius under high pressure, giving the therapist millimetre accuracy.

As a result, N2O can be delivered directly to the treated area without damaging healthy tissue.

Cryotherapy – What Is It?

Ultra-cold temperatures are used in cryotherapy to destroy tissue. In medical terms, it’s known as cryo-necrosis.

What Is The Duration Of Treatment?

The type and size of the lesion will determine how long the treatment will last and how many treatments you will need before seeing results.

However, the treatment procedure takes only 2 to 30 seconds for a typical superficial benign lesion.

When Can I Expect To See Results?

You will likely see results in 1 to 6 weeks after starting treatment.

Many lesions can be treated in a single session and do not require further care.

However, in some cases, due to the size and type of lesion, you may be advised to undergo another treatment to eradicate any leftover signs of the lesion.

Is The Procedure Painful?

Upon reaching the root of the lesion, the nitrous oxide will provide a slight sensation on the skin.

There may be some residual stinging for a few minutes after the process, and the area may be mildly irritated for about 10 minutes. The intense cold has an anaesthetic effect on most patients.

Is There A Difference In The Area Following Treatment?

The area freezes and becomes white during treatment.

Flushing occurs after the white area thaws, and the area turns red, forming a weal.

The weal may turn into a blister within 2-24 hours of being frozen; however, this is quite rare.

A crust develops typically over lesions after 10 to 14 days.

The skin will subsequently mend itself as a result. After a few weeks, the skin may seem lighter or pink.

Leg lesions often take a little longer to heal than other areas of the body. Larger lesions may develop a second crust, extending the healing time.

You should avoid picking at the crust, as this might cause scarring. You should dress any areas prone to rubbing or discomfort with a plaster.

What About Downtime?

After treatment, there is no downtime.

Will There Be Scarring?

Rarely.

Hyperpigmentation and hypopigmentation are known to come and go in the aftermath of the Cryopen treatment.

It typically takes a few months for the effects to pass.

Individuals with darker skin tones are more likely to develop pigmentary change.

What Can Areas Be Treated?

Many types of benign skin growths, including:

AGE SPOTS

BENIGN MOLES

CHERRY ANGIOMA

MILIA

SKIN TAGS

SUN DAMAGE

VERRUCAE

WARTS

However, a correct diagnosis is required before treatment since we will not treat any malignant lesions.

Your GP will tell you if a lesion looks suspicious of skin cancer, and you should seek their guidance.

Is The Treatment Permanent?

Cryosurgery is a permanent solution for most skin defects.

However, a shorter freeze time and a repeat procedure may be necessary in more delicate areas, such as the eye area, to achieve a result with the least damage to the surrounding skin.

In addition, several treatments are required to achieve the desired results when treating a deep lesion.

Is The Treatment Safe?

The Cryopen is CE and FDA approved, and its treatment safety is well established.

The CryoPen has a lower risk of complications than many other treatments. N2O is directly applied to the affected area and does not affect the surrounding healthy tissue.

What Are The Side Effects?

Inflammation of the skin’s tiny nerve endings can cause numbness or hypersensitivity when exposed to freezing temperatures.

In most cases, these symptoms will subside with time. The Cryopen treatment is non-invasive and relatively low-risk.

As the skin heals, the region may become darker (hyperpigmentation) or lighter (hypopigmentation).

Darker pigmented skin can take longer to regain its colour.

Who Is Not Suitable For Treatment?

Our CryoPen procedures are quick, efficient, and relatively risk-free.

However, it may not be appropriate for people with other conditions, such as collagen and autoimmune disease, rheumatoid arthritis, individuals previously treated with dermal fillers in the treatment area, and pregnant women.

We will assess any contraindications during your telephone consultation.

Cryotherapy Treatment Will Be Performed By?

Cryopen treatments can only be administered by a member of our highly trained team.

It should only be administered by someone properly trained in its use.

Is The Treatment Suitable For Darker Complexions?

Individuals with very dark skin may want to avoid cryosurgery, as it destroys pigment-producing cells, resulting in lighter skin.

Is There Anything That Happens During The Course Of A Treatment?

Liquid nitrogen is sprayed onto the skin lesions using a tiny applicator, which is then held against the skin imperfection.

The range is 1 to 30 seconds, depending on the tissue.

To restore the skin’s natural colouration, it is allowed to thaw.

Depending on the severity, the process can be repeated in the same area.

What Should Not Be Frozen:

All melanomas and basal cell carcinomas recur frequently.

There are several ways melanoma can spread: locally, lymphatically, and via the blood.

Additionally, if part of the lesion remains undetected, it may mutate into a much more aggressive form of the disease.

In most cases, basal cell carcinoma spreads by local extension, and if recurrence is suspected, you may need more extensive surgery.

Can I Have Treatment Throughout The Summer?

We can perform Cryopen treatments year-round; however, an SPF 50 must be applied at least 30 minutes before sun exposure and reapplied every 4 hours during the summer months.

How Long Will The Cryotherapy Treatments Last?

The treatment duration will be determined by the tissue surface area and thickness being addressed.

Is It Possible To Get The Treatment On The NHS?

In the United Kingdom, the NHS no longer treats skin tags, milia and cherry angiomas because they are considered cosmetic procedures.
